This journey takes you to the savannahs of the Highveld to the Atlantic in the west. Train begins at the perfectly preserved 19th-century German Hansa town of Swakopmund and Walvis Bay. Then a night in the game-rich Etosha National Park followed by a short flight to Sossusvlei, a stunning pan in the Namib Desert, for an overnight stay. Guests continue across the untamed beauty of the Kalahari Desert to Namibia’s capital for a tour; Windhoek is a lively, cosmopolitan city with a strong German flavour. The train traverses the stark vistas of the Northern Cape to the Fish River Canyon – second in size to the Grand Canyon – and Garas Park with its Quiver Tree Forest and the Giant’s Playground – an unforgettable end to a remarkable journey.

TOUR ITINERARY

DAY 1: ARRIVAL in WALVIS BAY

(B/L/D)
Upon arrival, transfer to Walvis Bay train station to board the luxury Rovos Rail.

Depart from the station around noon time and enjoy lunch as the train leaves the Atlantic and traverses the Namib Desert.

DAY 2: ETOSHA NATIONAL PARK

(B/L/D)
After breakfast, transfer to a lodge in the game-rich Etosha National Park

Etosha National Park is a protected area in northern Namibia. Lions, elephants, black rhinos and giraffes gather at waterholes such as Halali, Okondeka and the floodlit Okaukuejo. Rough roads fringe the vast white-green salt flat of the Etosha Pan, a breeding ground for flamingos.

Go on a safari game drive and overnight in the lodge.

DAY 3: ETOSHA - WINDHOEK

(B/L/D)
Early morning games drive in the Etosha National Park. Then, return to the train and travel south to Windhoek, the capital city.

DAY 4: Windhoek – Sossusvlei

(B/L/D)
Arrive in Windhoek for a city tour. On a hilltop in the city center are the 1890s Alte Feste, a former military headquarters with historical exhibits, and Independence Memorial Museum. Colonial influences are visible in nearby buildings like the sandstone Lutheran Christus Church.

After lunch, depart in light aircraft for one-hour flight to Sossusvlei Lodge for lunch, desert drive, bush dinner and overnight.

DAY 5: SOSSISVLEI

(B/L/D)
Sossusvlei drive with breakfast in the vlei. Depart Sossusvlei for one-hour flight to Windhoek. Return to the train and travel south through the Kalahari.

DAY 6: GARAS PARK – FISH RIVER

(B/L/D)
Visit Garas Park (Quiver Tree Forest/Giant’s Playground). One-hour transfer to visit the Fish River Canyon, the largest canyon in Africa. Approaching the Fish River Canyon from the north is like driving across Mars. The vast rocky landscape breaks up into a series of spectacular cliffs, formed by the Fish River as it meanders between boulders over half a kilometre below.

Dinner on board. Travel the Kalahari to the border

DAY 7: FREE & EASY

(B/L/D)
Join an optional two-hour walking tour of Upington and spend the day at own leisure as the train travels into the Great Karoo.

DAY 8: KIMBERLY

(B/L/D)
Arrive Kimberley in the afternoon for Big Hole and Diamond Museum tour. After the tour, you will continue your train journey and travel north into the Highveld.

Kimberley is the largest and capital city of the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. It is located approximately 110 km east of the confluence of the Vaal and Orange Rivers. The city has considerable historical significance due to its diamond mining past and the siege during the Second Boer War.

DAY 9: PRETORIA

(B)
On arrival at the Pretoria Station, disembark from the Rovos Rail and your train journey ends here.
